Understand the topic

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance in the blood. High levels of some types can contribute to buildup in arteries. A cholesterol test is one part of assessing heart and stroke risk; age, other conditions, and health history also matter. Your care team explains what your results mean together.

Your next steps after the visit

  1. Keep a copy of your results and next-test date.

  2. Review your food, activity, and medicine plan with your team.

  3. Report side effects or cost concerns before changing prescribed treatment.

Questions for your care team

  • What do LDL and HDL mean for me?
  • Why was this treatment recommended?
  • When should we check again?
